ALICE Kiosk Windows 10 Configuration and Settings Guide
This article walks through recommended Windows 10 PC settings to minimize disruptions to the ALICE Directory Kiosk.
If any of the below settings cannot be configured due to your organization's policies, contact the ALICE Support team.
Getting Started
- Create a new local user account.
- For hardware provided by the ALICE team, please contact ALICE Support for the default user's username and password.
- Assign the user to the Administrators group.
- Log in as that newly created user.
- Fully update Windows updates and reboot the PC as necessary.
Registry Settings
- Navigate to Windows Registration edit and make the following registry key changes:
- Disabling Zoom
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Zoom
- Create a new DWORD value named "ZoomDisabled" and set the value to 1.

- Configuring Auto login
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
- Create a new String Value named "AutoAdminLogon" and set the value to 1.
- Create a new String Value named "DefaultUserName" and set the value to the username.
- Create a new String Value named "DefaultPassword" and set the value to the password.

- Disabling Zoom
Taskbar Settings
- Navigate to Taskbar Settings.
- Under the "Notification Area," select Turn system icons on or off.
- Move the toggle switch next to "Action Center" to "Off."
Notification Settings
- Navigate to Windows Notifications and Actions Settings.
- Select Turn app notifications on and off.
- Under the "Notifications" section, move the toggle switch to "Off."
User Account Control Settings
- In Windows' User Account Control Settings (UAC) set the dial to "Never Notify."
Disabling Display List of OS Settings
- In Windows Explorer, right-click on "This PC" and choose Properties.
- Click on Advanced System Settings and select the Advanced tab.
- Under the "Startup and Recovery" section, click on Settings.
- Uncheck the box next to "Time to display list of operating systems."
- Uncheck the box next to "Time to display list of operating systems."
Pen and Touch Settings
- Open the Control Panel and select Pen and Touch.
- Select the Touch tab.
- Select Press and hold and click on Settings.
- Uncheck the box for "Enable press and hold for right-clicking," then click OK.
Local Group Policy Settings
- Open the Local Group Policy Editor.
- Add the following settings under Computer Configuration open Administrative Templates.
- Select Windows Components then Edge UI.
- Set the "Allow edge swipe" policy to "Disabled."
- Set the "Disable help tips" policy to "Enabled."
Device Manager
- Under "Network Adapters," right-click the current network adapter.
- Choose Properties.
- Select the Power Management tab.
- Uncheck the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" box.
- Click Apply or OK.
- Under "Universal Serial Bus controllers," right-click on all entries.
- Select Properties.
- Select the "Power Management" tab if available.
- Uncheck the box "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."
- Click Apply or OK.
Power Settings
- Navigate to Window's Power and Sleep Settings.
- Under "Screen" and "Sleep," choose Never from the drop-down boxes.
- Click on Additional Power Settings. Under "Choose or customize a power plan", click on the arrow next to the "Show Additional Plans" arrow to expand the options.
- Select "High Performance" as the power plan and click "Change plan settings."
- "Turn off the display" and "Put the computer to sleep" are set to Never.
- Click on Change advanced power settings.
- Under "Hard Disk," set "Turn off hard disk after" to Never.
- Under "Sleep" set the following...
- "Sleep after" to Never.
- "Allow hybrid sleep" to Never.
- "Hibernate after" to Never.
- Under USB settings, set "USB selective suspend setting" to Disabled.
Bluetooth
Turn off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections.
Do not enable Airplane Mode.
Printers
- Navigate to Printers and Scanner.
- Uncheck the box "Let Windows manage my default printer."
