Microsoft Excel Won't Show Japanese Characters

This article troubleshoots issues where Japanese characters do not appear correctly in Excel when editing a CSV.

  1. Open a new document in Excel, and then select the Data tab.
  2. Click on Get Data on the ribbon.
  3. Mouse over "From File" and select Text/CSV.
  4. Use the pop-up File Explorer window to navigate to the CSV file with the Japanese characters. 
  5. Click on Import.
  6. Change the "File Origin" to 65001: Unicode (UTF-8).

  7. Selct Transform Data.
  8. Click on Close & Load in the upper left corner in Excel.

  9. After Excel closes the window, select File and then Save As.

  10. Save the file type as CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited) (*.csv).

  11. Reopen the file, and the Japanese characters will appear properly.
