Remotely Connecting to the ALICE Directory Kiosk
This article provides guidance for remotely accessing the ALICE Directory kiosk.
To remotely manage your ALICE Kiosk PC, you must utilize a remote software tool. Connecting to the ALICE Kiosk directly typically is needed to:
- Make changes to Directory settings using the ALICE Configuration tool.
- Restart the ALICE Directory software to expedite the publishing of employee information.
- Modify or change local Windows settings.
The ALICE Kiosk is not usable when using a remote access tool. Only connect when the office is closed or prepare an alternative for visitors while the system is under maintenance.
Choosing a Remote Access Software
There are two primary ways to access the ALICE Kiosk.
- Windows' built-in RDP tools.
- Utilize third-party remote access software.
We recommend utilizing third-party remote access software due to certain limitations when connecting with RDP.
Third-Party Software Remote Access
Multiple types of third-party access software are available. Contact your it administration team to find out if your organization has an existing tool they utilize.
The following tools have been found to work with ALICE:
- GotoAssist - The ALICE Receptionist team utilizes this application for support.
- Bomgar
- Team Viewer
- VNC
RDP Access
RDP can be utilized to access the ALICE Kiosk. However, there are key considerations to keep in mind.
- RDP sessions change the PC's display and device settings to reflect the PC connecting in. This may cause the following issues:
- The ALICE software may appear distorted due to the connected PC's resolution settings.
- The ALICE software may not launch if it cannot find the appropriate video or audio devices.
- Once disconnected, the ALICE Kiosk will not log back in automatically.
- If the ALICE PC is configured to automatically log in and launch ALICE, instead of disconnecting the RDP session, restart the ALICE PC. This will automatically reset and restore the ALICE Directory.
We recommend visually confirming the ALICE system has been properly relaunched to avoid system downtime.
