ALICE Directory – Installation & First Time Configuration

This article walks through the ALICE Directory installation and the first-time configuration.

Installation

This section walks through the installation of the ALICE Directory software.

  1. Press the Install button if any Microsoft Visual C++ packages need to be installed.

  2. Click Next to proceed through the process and follow the on-screen prompts. If applicable, permit the computer’s firewall software to allow the installation to continue.

  3. Choose the web services from the following options, then click Next to continue:

    Cloud Servers (Default) –Customers using the ALICE Cloud for data storage will select this option.
    1. Local (Lync, Active Directory) –Customers who have installed the ALICE Local Database and ALICE Admin application will select this option.
      1. Server – If the ALICE Local Database is on the same PC as the ARD, use the default “localhost” entry. Enter the server's name or IP address if the database is installed on a separate device. If an IP address is used, it must be reserved or static.
      2. Port –Enter the port number for the server where the ALICE Services are installed. The default port number is 8010.
      3. Test Connection – This button will test to verify that the ALICE Directory can connect to the ALICE Database using the local settings.
  4. Continue to follow the on-screen recommendations and click Install.
  5. Click Finish.

Three new icons will appear on the Desktop:

  • ALICE Directory – Directly launches the ALICE Directory software.

  • ALICE Configuration – Launches the ALICE Configuration tool to customize the ALICE Directory settings.

  • ALICE TaskBar – If ALICE is configured to disable the taskbar in Windows, an improper shutdown may cause the taskbar to be unavailable even when ALICE isn't running. The ALICE TaskBar icon will re-enable the Windows taskbar when selected.

First Time Configuration

Prerequisites

  • A valid ALICE license key.
  • SIP Extension for the ALICE Directory.
  • A USB web camera.
  • Audio input (microphone) and output (speakers). For the best audio quality, a speakerphone with echo cancellation is recommended.

  • An active wired internet connection. This connection is required even for registration purposes for local data and communication systems.

  • The required network rules and firewall exemptions. Review the Network Configuration Options article for more details.

First-Time Start-Up of the ALICE Configuration

Launch the “ALICE Configuration” desktop shortcut or the Windows Start menu.

Once the ALICE Configuration is launched, a valid ALICE Receptionist license key is required. This key is unique to this machine and will be provided when your license has been purchased. Enter your ALICE license key and click OK.

The ALICE Configuration will launch.

At any time during the configuration process, clicking Finish will save the settings and launch the ARD. After completing each section, click the Next button to move on. Select a section from the navigation bar on the left to jump to a specific step in the process.

Clicking Cancel will close the configuration window without saving the changes and launching the ARD.
